Creating Footnotes using Cite While You Write

To create footnotes, you need to first create the footnote using the Reference tools in Word, and then insert the EndNote citation into the footnote.

  • Open the EndNote Library that contains the references you want to cite, along with the appropriate Word document
  • Place the cursor at the end of the sentence for which you want your footnote.
  • In Word, navigate to the References tab and select Insert Footnote. This will create a superscript number where your cursor was placed as well as a corresponding number in the footer.
  • Click on the EndNote tab in Word and click Insert Citation and find the selected citation(s) from your EndNote Library.

EndNote will automatically insert both the footnote and create a bibliography entry at the end of your document. To add additional footnotes, repeat the process above.
