EndNote formatting

The DPT program at Sac State requires some modifications to the default AMA 11 Style in EndNote. Once you have installed EndNote and added references to your EndNote library, follow the steps below to ensure that your EndNote output is correct.

If you have any other questions about EndNote, reach out to your librarian, Alicia Zuniga (alicia.zuniga@csus.edu) or schedule an appointment online

Add AMA 11 Style if missing

  • Tools > Output Styles > Open Style Manager > Scroll to find AMA 11. If unchecked, check AMA 11 box and close popup window.
  • If missing: Get More on the Web > Search AMA > Download AMA > Drag and drop AMA 11 Style file from downloads folder to styles folder in EndNote program files on computer. Close and reopen EndNote and repeat steps in first bullet point.

No hanging indent

The references in your reference list in Word should all be aligned at the same place on the left hand side like the image below:

Example of reference list without hanging indent

If they have a hanging indent, follow the instructions below to remove it:

  • Tools > Output Styles > Edit AMA 11 > Bibliography (left menu) > Layout > Select “all paragraphs” from Hanging Indent drop down menu in lower right hand corner > close and save when prompted.

Abbreviating journal names in citation

  • Add term list: Library > Open term lists > Journals term list > lists tab > import list > select medical.txt

  • Tools > Output Styles > Edit AMA 11 > Journal names (left menu) > Abbreviation 1 > close and save when prompted.

Titles in sentence case

In AMA, the titles of works cited in the reference list need to be in sentence case (only the first letter of the first word in the title is capitalized). To make sure that EndNote automatically formats titles this way, follow the instructions below.

  • Tools > Edit "AMA 11th" (or whatever the name of your copy of AMA 11th is) > Title Capitalization (Under Footnotes on the lefthand side) > Select "Sentence style capitalization" and Save.

Formatting bibliography in Word

You can edit the appearance of your references list in Word. In Word, click on the EndNote 21 tab and select the tiny arrow on the bottom right side of the bibliography section:

In the popup, click on the Layout tab and modify the options (font, font size, title of references section, numbering or indent). If you have followed the steps above, you most likely only need to adjust the font, size and bibliography title to your liking or professor's specifications.
