PSYC 135: Psychology of Multicultural Groups (Prof. Paulette Garcia Peraza)

Defining Race, Ethnicity, & Racism

Race is based on physical appearances, like skin color, and is rooted in asserting power and resources. Ethnicity is a person's social group membership based on a shared language, food, geography, and traditions. Both of these terms are socially constructed and related to each other. This is why it can sometimes be challenging to differentiate between both terms.

Racism are the beliefs, attitudes, institutional arrangements, and acts that put down individuals or groups because of appearance or ethnicity. Racism can show up in overt ways like racial profiling or in more covert ways like microaggressions.

Impacts of Racism

Racism can profoundly impact physical and mental health, access to resources, education, and so much more. See these student-created guides for more specific information on the impacts of racism and how to start racial healing.

Becoming Anti-Racist

In order to fight against racism, individuals can work to be anti-racist and push back against racist beliefs, ideas, and policies. Below is a list of readings if you'd like to learn more about racism and being anti-racist.
