Electronic Theses & Dissertations (ETDs)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When submitting a co-authored manuscript, does each student need to submit?

A: Currently, ProQuest recommends that each author submit separately. This way each author will be listed in ProQuest Dissertation & Theses as a primary author, assigned a publication number, and receive any ordered printed copies with their name printed on them.

At this moment, regarding multi-authored works, ProQuest recommends to not register for copyright through ETD Administrator. Currently, ProQuest only processes registration for individual authored works.

For more information, contact ProQuest at disspub@proquest.com.

Q: Can I place an embargo on my work?

A: You can place an embargo on your work. These are approved by your committee and the Office of Graduate Studies.

Q: I received notification that my manuscript has been published. Where can I view it online?

A: Student graduate projects, theses, and dissertations are published on both ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global and the University Library repository Sac State Scholars.

First, your work will be published on ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, which makes your work available to a global audience. Please note that this database is subscription-based, so it is not available to the public.

In addition to ProQuest, your work will also be published on the CSUS University Library repository Sac State Scholars. This is an open-access database that is freely accessible to the public, which means that your work will be available to a wide audience and may be cited and used by others in their research.

Q: How can I continue to access ProQuest if I will no longer have a SacLink account?

A: When you register for ETD Administrator, it is best that you list both your school email address and a separate personal email address in the Permanent Email Address field of the contact information section so that you can maintain access to your account if needed after your SacLink account has expired.

Q: How can I make changes or corrections to my manuscript after approval and publication?

A: Take the following steps to make changes to your graduate project, thesis, or dissertation in ProQuest and in Sac State Scholars.

  • To make changes to your manuscript in Sac State Scholars:
    • Contact Grad Degree Services regarding obtaining permission to make changes to your manuscript at grad_degreeservices@csus.edu.
    • Ask Grad Degree Services to email their permission/approval of changes and the updated manuscript to Lib-Scholars@csus.edu.
  • To update your thesis in ProQuest:
    • Email the following to ProQuest at disspub@proquest.com:
      • An email of permission to make changes to your published manuscript from the Grad Degree Services
      • A complete, corrected PDF copy of the manuscript (The PDF can be emailed to ProQuest as an attachment, as long as the file size does not exceed 25 MB. For larger files, you can use Dropbox or similar)
    • Pay a correction fee in the amount of $47.00 for ProQuest’s vault repair process (This is payable after both approval and the updated PDF are received. To process payment by phone, please call 800-521-0600, press 2 then 1 (M-F from 5AM to 3PM PST) - any Author & School Relations team member can help, just provide your publication number. Contact disspub@proquest.com for more information).

Q: Are there bound versions of manuscripts circulating in the library?

A: Yes, there are. Graduate projects, theses, and dissertations published before 2009 have physical copies in the library. More recent graduate theses, projects, and dissertations are online only. They can be found on our Sac State Scholars platform. With the author's permission, many of the older print graduate manuscripts have been digitized and can also be found on Sac State Scholars.

Q: My manuscript was published in the past. Where can I order a bound copy of my manuscript?

A: You can order a bound copy of your thesis/project/dissertation through Thesis on Demand if the window to order with ProQuest has closed. There, you'll be able to select your cover, printing, and paper options.

Requesting a bound copy via Thesis on Demand requires a PDF version of your manuscript. If you do not have a digital copy of your manuscript and cannot find it on Sac State Scholars, please submit a Thesis Digitization Request to have your manuscript digitized by the library. Refer to the following question for more details.

Q: I submitted my print thesis/project/dissertation prior to Fall 2009. Can you digitize and add it to Sac State Scholars?

A: Yes. Please submit a Thesis Digitization Request. Upon receiving your online form, the Library will work on digitizing your print thesis/project/dissertation and add it to Sac State Scholars. If you have any questions regarding the form or the process, please contact Lib-Scholars@csus.edu.
