Business basics

If you opt to research a general or specific type of economic activity, you may want to consult with the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS which is pronounced similarly to snakes) to ensure you're using standard terminology, ensure if there is a code specifically for the economic activity you've selected (i.e. is it viable/easy to research),

  • New codes are added after a sufficient amount of economic activity happens e.g. marijuana dispensaries are currently lumped in with cigarette, pipe, vape, etc. stores. (You may want to try the Department of Cannabis Control instead).
  • There is no easy code for malls or strip malls making these extra challenging topics (strip malls in particular).
  • Some of our subscription databases have a workaround if your NAICS code isn't specific enough (adjusted SIC codes).

Tools for firm-specific topics

If you opt to research the locations of a specific firm, many times the firm's website is the easiest place to get the most up-to-date location information. The library does provide access to a few useful tools you may want to try, anyway.

Tools for general or specific business types

The United States Census Bureau conducts an extensive number of economic-related surveys. The most helpful for this assignment is listed below:
