What is a literature review?

A literature review is used to survey, analyze, and synthesize disseminated scholarly literature on a particular topic. Sources of scholarly information can be found in academic journal articles, books, conference proceedings, and theses and dissertations. Reviewing the literature consolidates what is already known about a subject and can assist in formulating/revising your research question by recognizing any knowledge gaps that your research might bridge.
