Nature Writing in American Literature: Seminal and Noteworthy Books of Fiction

Introduction

Traditionally, scholars and critics have looked to nonfiction for examples of nature writing. It is my contention that nature writing can also occur in fictional forms.  In the novels, novellas, and short story collections described in my annotated bibliography, nature is a significant force in shaping the story, directing the plot, and determining the identities of central characters.  Relationships with nature are personal; characters are affected emotionally, and often spiritually, by their engagement with nature.  Annotations attempt to convey nature’s agency and demonstrate the personal qualities of these relationships.

The books selected for these bibliographies are monographs, whole works, rather than anthologies.  Dates of publication range from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

If you wish to see if the CSUS University Library has a particular book, go to OneSearch and do either a title search for the book or an author search by typing the author's last name first followed by the first name.  Narrow your search to Library Catalog.
