Law Research: United States & California

The Sacramento County Public Law Library serves the courts, lawyers, & citizens. Use of the library's collection is free. A team of highly skilled professional, technical, and clerical staff provide appropriate resources to meet the legal community's needs.

CSUS doesn't have a law school but like many universities our curriculum offers courses that involve studying law in academic subjects. The Library subscribes to WESTLAW. However, there are law libraries in our region that can provide legal material that we don't.

The Bernard E. Witkin State Law Library collection contains selected primary and secondary sources in American law. It is particularly strong in both California and older national primary and practice materials.

The Library contains over 290,000 volumes of books in over eight miles of shelving, over 150,000 volume-equivalents of microforms, and has access to a number of proprietary online databases. Over 40,000 volumes of seldom used materials are stored off site at UC's NRLF (Northern Regional Library Facility) and are retrievable within 2 days. The collection includes the basic sources of United States, British, Canadian, and Australian law, as well as International law.
