Sources for Background Information

Why bother? Because it will help:

  • Provide context for your research (help you understand your general topic better)
  • Identify search terms
  • Formulate questions
  • Determine if enough information exists for you to write a paper
  • Save you time!
  • Gale Virtual Reference
Search this encyclopedia entry to find information on your topic. It may help you decide which subtopics to include in your argument.
  • CQ Researcher
Great place to start researching your topic. Topics are often framed in a pro/con argument.
  • Review Articles
Run a search in your favorite article database and then use the limits to refine your search to "review" articles, or add "review" as a key word. Review articles are a synthesis of current literature on a specific topic.
  • Wikipedia
Use it to gather ideas and keywords, but don't cite it!
  • OneSearch Catalog
Limit your results to books (print or online)
