Juvenile Collection

Our entire Juvenile Collection is arranged using the same call number and classification system as most school and public libraries.  These books are housed on the orange shelves on 2SOUTH.

Picture Books, Early Readers, Novels, and other fiction items are arranged alphabetically by author's last name.

Non-fiction Juvenile books have Dewey Decimal call numbers, from 001- 999.

Books are arranged on the shelf in numerical order by the decimal number, e.g. 430, 430.973, 431. When two books on the same topic have the same number, then look at the the second line of the call number, which begins with a letter that usually represents the author's last name or, if there is no author, the title.

Outline of the Dewey Decimal System

000 – Computer science, information & general works
100 – Philosophy and psychology

200 – Religion
300 – Social sciences
400 – Language
500 – Science
600 – Technology
700 – Arts and recreation
800 – Literature
900 – History, geography, and biography

Curriculum Guides are grouped by very general topics (Language Arts, Social Studies or Science) and then given an accession number, e.g., Science 4034 . This means that items on the same exact subject aren't shelved together as they would be in the LC system.
