Veterans: Selected Resources

Important

Books, reports from government agencies, masters theses and videos can serve as a solid foundation for a research paper, providing depth and coverage of a topic.  Books are a good choice for locating definitions, overviews, explanations of theories, and historical treatments of a topic.  Use the options to the right to find relevant items.

How to Find Books in the Library

Citing in APA Format

Papers in Social Work must follow the APA Style Guide for formatting the paper and citing the sources used.

Consult the Sac State Library's brief APA Style Guide, which provides examples and links to other online sources of help.

The Sac State Library owns copies of the "Publication Manual of the APA" for students to use.  Check it out from the Main Floor User Service Desk with the call number BF 76.7 P83 2010.

OneSearch -Looking under a broad subject

Conduct a Subject Search within OneSearch, by changing the pull down menu to the left of the search box from "Any" to "in subject".  Use the following Subject Headings to browse OneSearch to find books, government reports, masters theses and videos that are owned by the Sac State Library.

You can check out most of the items you find by presenting your OneCard at the Library's main floor User Services Desk.

If you wish to search more specific or more complicated topics, use the Advanced Keyword search option described in the box below.

OneSearch - Advanced Keyword Searching

Use the Advanced Keyword Search to investigate more complicated topics or to correlate two or more topics.

For example:
Veterans
AND
Disab*
AND
“Alcohol Abuse”

Using the TRUNCATION symbol, *, will search for disabled, disability and disabilities.
Putting a phrase in quotes will search for those two words adjacent, for example, "alcohol abuse".

Follow these guidelines to find Masters Theses and PhD Dissertations.

Expanding your results by using bibliographies

When looking at a book, be sure to browse the bibliography or reference list and identify titles of interest.
These extra sources will quickly expand by many times the results of your initial search.
To see if the Sac State Library has the cited book, see below.

How to check if the Sac State Library already owns a book you need

Go to OneSearch Advanced Search.

In the 1st search box, type the title of the book and to the left of the box, select Title from the pull down menu.

In the 2nd search box, type the last name of the author and to the left of the box, select Author from the pull down menu.

If available, OneSearch will provide the floor location and the call number of the book in the Library.

How to get books that are not available at the Sac State Library

Most books can be obtained for free or for a low fee through Interlibrary Loan, which takes 1 week.  Click on Submit Requests and then First Time Users.  Once you complete the online profile, submit your request through the online form.

Another option is to get the book yourself at another local library.  Search the UC Davis Library.  If the book is available, you can check it out from the Davis library with your OneCard.  Search the California State Library.  State employees can check out books; the public can make photocopies.   Search other library catalogs, such as the Sacramento Public Library (get a library card) and Los Rios Community Colleges.
