A current issue within Archaeology revolves around human remains and indigenous groups' rights to those remains. NAGPRA (Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act) was passed in 1990 and issued a mandate to those institutions holding Native American remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and other culturally significant objects to return them to direct descendants or to the affiliated Native American group.
